Sundance is a luxury resort located in Utah. The resort has long and well rooted history in Utah.

Utah itself was named after the Ute Indian tribe and translates as people of the mountains. The Ute Indians would traditionally come to what is now known as Provo Canyon in the summer.

Provo canyon hosted a variety of wildlife and was cooler than the plains during the summer. Explorers came to the Utah valley, and soon after many settlers began to move in.

The Stewarts were one family who settled in the Provo canyon. The early Stewarts came from Scottish descent whose occupations were generally surveyors and sheepherders.

The Stewarts decided to open a local ski resort in the early 1950s. They decided to name it Timphaven after Mount Timpanogus which shadows Provo Canyon.

At this time, chair lifts were extreme luxury, and Timphaven proudly hosted a chair lift service for the skiers. They also had a rope tow and a restaurant.

The restaurant was named Ki-Te-Kai meaning “come and get it!” in the Maori language. Maori is spoken by an indigenous Polynesian tribe from New Zealand.

Like so many settlers to Utah, many of the Stewarts were Mormon, which had an influence on their business. One of the Stewarts served a mission to the islands and learned the Maorian language.

Then, in 1969, the Stewarts sold Timphaven to Robert Redford. At the time Timphaven and the land sold with it was quite the investment.

Originally, many New York investors saw Timphaven and its surrounding land as a prime location for burgeoning business. However, Robert Redford had a different vision.

Instead, Redford saw Timphaven as an opportunity to preserve the natural environment and to promote the arts. He decided to create what is known today as the Sundance resort.

Robert Redford experimented with all the possibilities of Sundance had to offer. As a result, he was met with both successes and many failures.

In the beginning the Sundance resort hosted a dinner/movie night. This idea was abandoned after the waiters repeatedly ran into each other in the dark.

Sundance also used to host a mountain man gathering where the men would practice musket shooting and have cannon competition. This tradition was also abandoned when it was realized that loud noise from the muskets and cannons scared both domestic and wild animals and caused them to leave the area for a long time.

Although there were some rough patches at the beginning, Sundance has evolved into one of the most popular luxury resorts in Utah. Sundance hosts a variety of activities at all times of the year.

One of the biggest events of the year is the Sundance Film Festival. Located in Park City, the Film Festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year during January.

During the Film Festival 200 films are showcased. These films come from over 9,000 submissions from the previous year.

These 200 films are usually classified as documentaries, dramas, or short films. In addition to the films, Sundance entertains live musical performances.

Throughout the Film Festival there are also panel discussions featuring major producers and other key film industry leaders, among many other activities. The Sundance Film Festival is a wide collection of talent from all over the world.

Other activities during the winter include skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. Sundance provides rental equipment for those who plan to use the many trails surrounding the resort.

Sundance caters to the family with over 41 trails for skiers of varying difficulties and scenery. They also provide family packages to stay in the Sundance lodges while enjoying the variety of activities.

Throughout the summer, Sundance provides scenic lift rides, hiking trials, mountain biking, fly fishing, horseback riding, river rafting and golfing. It is also an ideal location for Outdoor Camps for children.

Throughout the years Sundance has evolved from a settler’s lodge to a grand luxury resort with a well founded history and one of the scenic views.
